- Value Engineering
-
Value Engineering is the application of the
Value Methodology to a project, product, or process. It is usually
done early (typically 30%) of the design process.
-
- Value Planning
-
Value Planning is is the application of the
Value Methodology when the conceptual design has not yet been finalized.
Value Analysis techniques, especially Function Analysis Systems Technique,
or FAST, diagramming, are used to select the optimum initial direction for
the design to proceed. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command refers
to this as Function Analysis at Concept Development (FACD).
-
- Value Management
-
Traditionally Value Analysis is applied to
manufacturing or construction. However, Value Analysis techniques can also
be applied to non-traditional projects, e.g., organizational structures,
procedures, safety procedures, etc.

Value Improving Practices
-
Independent Project Analysis (IPA) has recommended the use Value
Improving Practices (VIPs) in conjunction with Front End Loading to
achieve Best-In-Class. Completion of these VIPs are often used
in evaluating a project’s performance and allowing it to proceed to
the next phase.

- Facilitation
-
Every
meeting of more than four or five people needs a leader who will keep an
open and balanced conversational flow and protect individuals and their
ideas from personal attack.
-
- VE and TRIZ
-
Formal VE and TRIZ studies have
rarely been combined. This is perplexing because each methodology has
strengths that can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the other.
Recently, a large chemical company initiated parallel VE and TRIZ studies of
several of their key chemical intermediates and feedstock products. Each
successive parallel study revealed a strong symbiotic relationship between
the two methodologies and a procedure to combine them evolved.
